Yes to the Behavioral Health Center – No to Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

County Commissioners took up a rezoning issue surrounding a proposed central receiving facility for mental health patients. The Collier County Behavioral Health Center would be located next to the David Lawrence Center.

The applicant has requested the property be rezoned from Estates to Community Facilities Planned Unit Development to permit the development. The facility would be a maximum of 64,000 square feet and while it could house up to 102 patient beds, the current design has it at 87 beds with the potential for another 15 to be added during a future expansion. Right now, anyone having an acute mental health crisis is taken to the county jail; the proposed Behavioral Health Center would take over those central receiving facility duties. Over 60 people were signed up to speak on both sides of the issue.

In 2018, voters approved a sales surtax to fund a central receiving facility that would be managed by the David Lawrence Center.
