Caregiver Tip #5: Love on your loved ones

"I know from experience, caring for a loved one who is suffering from severe anxiety and depression can take a toll on the caregiver. Caregivers can get to a point of frustration and even hopelessness. Often, caregivers are given bad advice from people telling them to play tough love with their loved ones as if this will snap them to their senses.

Your loved one is experiencing a serious medical brain illness. They need love and caring support just as if they were battling cancer. As well, those suffering from mental illness can get very bad advice from people against their caregiver because they don't understand the challenges and stress the caregiver is going through. This divisiveness can creates a toxic environment which can drive the caregiver away, a terrible outcome for your loved one. Caregivers, don't give up. Love on your loved one and surround yourselves with loving and supportive people who care for you both."
