Caregiver Tip #11: How to Access Help for your Loved One

“At one time or another, we all have been touched by mental health needs, whether you, a family member, a coworker or a friend.

Resources are available to support the financial costs associated with mental health wellness. Reach out to your employer's HR department. Many companies, both large and small, have employee assistance programs (EAP). EAPs connect those in need with free counseling and therapy services. Often times these benefits apply not only to the employee but also extend to family members. My employee assistance plan offers 5 free face-to-face visits for me and each of my family members for each issue that arises. Another resource to explore is through your medical insurance. Review your summary plan description for the details of what your plan covers. You can also find the customer service phone number and website on the back of your medical insurance card. Don't let the concern of the potential cost deter you from getting the help you or your loved one need. You may be surprised by the services you have access to. Dealing with your insurance plan can be challenging when you are already stressed about mental health issues you or your loved ones are experiencing. If you have trouble understanding your policy, ask questions – reach out to your Human Resources department, doctor’s office, or trusted friend to help explain the information. If you're uninsured or unemployed, visit the Collier Cares app for non-profit resources. #bettertogether #humanresourcesupport
