Hundreds of patients impacted as crisis unit still closed three months after Ian

SalusCare faces crisis with crisis unit closure with Ian repairs in limbo

Lee County’s only mental health crisis unit run by SalusCare that can accept people for involuntary evaluations remains closed more three months after flood damage from Hurricane Ian.

That means hundreds of patients facing a behavioral health crisis, which could be life-threatening, are not getting timely assessments and intervention or not getting help at all, according to officials with the nonprofit SalusCare.

The numbers of patients caught in the middle of an insurance battle will soon hit the thousands as the center’s property carrier and flood carrier deny responsibility for damage caused by 2 feet of water. The crisis unit serves both children and adults.
